Controversies in the Aetiology of stage I and II Endometriosis (1495)

An audit of 810 patients having undergone surgery to excise stage I and II endometriosis will be presented to examine the findings of the sub-group of patients that required repeat surgery. The site and amount of ‘recurrence” will be discussed in relation to how the study observations tend to confirm or refute the dominant aetiological theory that retrograde menstruation is the main cause of endometriosis. The various other theories regarding aetiology of endometriosis will also be discussed along with evidence that supports each theory.

M.B.B.S., FRCOG, FRANZCOG, MAOG Michael’s areas of special interest include advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques, particularly with regard to endometriosis and pelvic reconstruction, including mesh augmented surgery. Along with his colleagues at Oxford Women’s Health, Michael has been at the forefront of developing and introducing new advanced laparoscopic techniques within New Zealand and helps manage the endoscopic fellowship programme in Christchurch. Michael was involved in the New Zealand wine industry for almost twenty years and has in the past written a regular wine critique column for Avenues magazine in Christchurch. He continues to enjoy creative writing and for sport enjoys sailing and cycling.
